About this event
Join News Creator Corps and Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press for a free workshop for creators on vetting your content for legal risk. Jen Nelson of the RCFP will walk through how to assess your work before you hit publish: what actually creates exposure to libel and defamation claims, where the common traps show up in the formats creators are working in, and how to pressure-test a piece when you know it’s going to make someone unhappy. She’ll also cover the point where self-assessment isn’t enough—when to bring in an organization like RCFP for a pre-publication legal review, and what that process looks like when you do. This is especially important in the current environment where the powerful are more than happy to use legal threat to attempt to bury a story. Understanding your legal rights will give you the confidence to continue telling the stories your community needs.
